Swedens first "Crop Gas Plant"
One year ago, together with local politicians from Norrköping, Svensk Biogas, broke earth towards the building of the first Crop Gas Plant in Sweden. Svensk Biogas is the largest producer of biogas for vehicles in Sweden. This unique plant now stands ready to be taken into commission in the beginning of next year. By using the refuse from the bio-ethanol plant next door this Crop Gas Plant will in fact more than double the energy output in vehicle fuel using the same farmlands and raw materials, thereby setting an example for the renewable fuel industry.
The biogas vehicle fuel industry as been growing at an ever increasing rate during recent years, in fact five percent of vehicles in Linköping alone run on biogas and the same figures are expected throughout the region before long. Biogas is no longer vehicle fuel for environmentalists, it is a necessary ingredient in reaching self sufficiency and ensuring vehicle fuel requirements in the future. The number of biogas refuelling stations in Sweden has increased by 300% since 2002, biogas production plants are popping up all over the country and new models of so called CNG vehicle are continuously being released.
Interest has been enormous both locally and internationally and now we look forward to supplying our expanding market with biogas from our new Crop Gas Plant as well, says managing director of Svensk Biogas, Carl Lilliehöök.
The new Crop Gas Plant has been strategically located next door to the bio ethanol plant. Here it can use not only residue from crop production in the agricultural industry but also the refuse from the neighbouring bio ethanol plant. Furthermore the choice of location was necessary to provide the expanding market with biogas.
Sales have increased by 170 % in Norrköping during the last year! The enthusiasm of our customers is clear and this makes our day to day work so much more stimulating says Helena Engström, the Svensk Biogas sales representative in the Norrköping region.
The first stage of the new Crop Gas Plant will have a capacity of more than 1.5 million normal cubic meters (Nm3) of biogas per year. However, work has already been initiated on the second stage which will increase capacity to over 4 million Nm3 per year, a necessary step to meet expected demands in the future, says Werner Scheidegger, technical manager, Svensk Biogas.
